Eyeglasses are the height of fashion. No longer for just the nerdy and the geeky ray ban aviator , movie stars don them on the red carpet. Once shunned as a hindrance to beauty and glamor, now they accentuate those cheekbones. Put on those quirky spectacles and project a new persona. Cary Grant did it, Marilyn Monroe did it and no one can argue with their glamor quotient.
With the baby boomers reaching middle-age, awareness sets in first with the weakening eyesight. With more than a few movies showing actors fumbling with menus and newspapers, unwilling to succumb to middle age, the joking gave way to style. Glasses have become cool. Boomers cannot take all the credit. Harry Potter, Woody Allen and Johnny Depp may have something to do with it too.
Reading glasses would be found in the drugstore, hanging on a rack with maybe three or four choices, all of them lacking style or even durability. Department stores sold a few fashionable styles but that too was hard going. Even the optometrists had little to offer in the way of reading glasses. That is no more. Websites abound offering reading glasses in all shapes, sizes, colors and styles. There is every price point from inexpensive to designer. Consider shopping online for glasses. The variety is astounding.
If reading sunglasses have eluded you in the stores, seek no more. From cool Italian-style to Elvis Costello-quirky they are all represented. Best of all you can find bifocals so that while you are out and about, you can read signs, price tags and still keep your shades on. If you are too proud to have that bifocal line giving away your age, you can buy sunglasses without it at slightly more cost.
